Stars Prospect Profile: Joe Morrow

Ah, yes, the draft day stick pic...

Ah, yes, the draft day stick pic…

Article by special contributor Mitchell Droz

Notice: This article was written by a Penguins fan. The Stars are my number two team, no contest. None. But I digress…

Stars fans, it has become official. This team is moving in a decidedly new direction; a younger, faster direction. Brenden Morrow has been dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a trade that, on its surface, could seem like a massive failure by management. The captain of the team for a defensive prospect and a third round pick exchanged for a fifth? It’s understandable to be worried. However, Dallas’ new acquisition is not just another defensive prospect. Joseph Morrow is a 20 year old smooth-skating offensive defenseman with a large amount of untapped potential. I’ll be honest, as a Penguins fan this trade made me excited, but as a Stars fan, I was ecstatic.

Stars Trade Brenden Morrow to Penguins for NHL-Ready Prospect

NHL: Calgary Flames at Dallas Stars

With the Stars’ inconsistent play seemingly improving as of late, there was some question if GM Joe Nieuwendyk would trade some veteran pieces when the Stars might sneak into the playoffs this year. The question has been answered. It appears the Stars will send Brenden Morrow and a third round pick to Pittsburgh for Joe Morrow and a fifth round pick.

The Stars visited the Staples Center tonight to meet the defending champion LA Kings for the first of five matches between the teams. LA was playing their third game in four nights, but they were playing very well, as their record of 7-1 in their last eight games would indicate.  The Stars were coming off a three day break, and were playing well, too. In their last 13 games, the Stars had scored at least three goals in 12 of them. In a game featuring two upward trending teams, which team would be better tonight?

The Stars finally broke their jinx on back-to-back games against Columbus tonight, but it wasn’t easy. Here’s how it went down at Nationwide Arena in Ohio.

First Period

The first period was a very free flowing affair, with few stoppages in play and only one penalty called. The Stars outshot the Blue Jackets 14-5, and were rewarded when Cody Eakin’s centering pass glanced in off Brenden Morrow’s skate. The period ended 1-0 Stars.

Benn’s “Gordie Howe hat trick” leads Stars to win

The Stars and Sharks came into this game looking like teams looking for answers. After starting the season 7-0-0, the Sharks have  faltered in their last nine games, going 1-5-3 and scoring only 2 power play goals in 46 chances. The Stars have had their own struggles on the power play, and their goaltending situation is tenuous at best, as Cristopher Nilstorp and Richard Bachman have failed to impress in Kari Lehtonen’s absense. Which team would break through tonight?

Six days ago, the Stars escaped Vancouver with a 4-3 win, their best of the season. In that game, the Stars lost Kari Lehtonen and overcame a 3-1 deficit with all the goals coming from the Stars’ young players – Dillon, Roussel, Eakin and Smith. Would Vancouver get their revenge, or would the Stars’ young players be the difference again?

First Period
In the first shift of the game, Jamie Benn got the Stars on the board. He took on seemingly the entire Canucks team, relentlessly attacking as he moved to the right of the net. Vancouver’s goalie, Schneider, leaned up against the goalpost, but Benn, the league’s most accurate shooter, popped it up and over his left shoulder.
